Module 5 Assignment

The theme I have chosen for this production of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is “the tragedy of indecision.” Hamlet is a character who delays a lot before taking action due to the impact of each decision that he makes. This hesitation results in not only the tragedy of Hamlet but also the tragedy of those who are associated with him. Therefore, this will be one of the main themes in the play to show how Hamlet deals with issues such as revenge, his relationship with Ophelia, and insanity.

The central symbol for my production will be a clock. The clock will reflect the burden of hesitating by the main character, Hamlet, in the play and that there will be consequences. The sound of time and the awareness of its passing will reflect the burden of hesitating in the play. It will be visible on stage, and this will serve as a constant reminder of Hamlet’s predicament. Towards the later part of the play, the clock will be obscured or replaced to reflect Hamlet’s declining sanity.

This production will be set during the Romantic period. This is because this period aligns perfectly with the themes of Hamlet, which delve into his inner turmoil and indecision. It reflects the deep thinking and the state of excitement that characterizes the play. Therefore, what better place to set a moody, atmospheric show than on an ornate gothic proscenium arch stage? Moreover, the setting will be the high, dark walls of the Elsinore castle, and the special staircase to the higher level will simulate the throne. The general atmosphere of the interiors will be gloomy, with a predominantly dark color palette and the presence of fabrics with deep, rich shades of gems. Lighting will be greatly used, with spotlights and dark areas to help create tension. Notably, Hamlet’s costumes are dark colors like blue and black, with refined embroidery that suggests his morbid personality.

Lastly, for the dream cast, I have chosen Timothée Chalamet to play the role of Hamlet because of his youthful disposition, mixed with brooding and intense emotions. Cate Blanchett will portray Gertrude since I believe her subtle acting will fully capture the queen’s guilt and inner struggle. The lovely and talented Daisy Ridley will play Ophelia to give this character the emotional complexity she requires. With this dream cast and the vision for the shooting, I am sure I can create a visually impressive version of Hamlet.
