Healthcare Information Technology Trends
Healthcare Technology Trends in Surgical ICU
In the modern healthcare landscape, technology is crucial for managing and distributing patient information. In my level 2 hospital’s Surgical ICU, key technologies include Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems like Cerner, and Omnicell for medication dispensing, and the Bridge system for blood bank management.
Significant Trends in Healthcare Technology
A significant trend is the integration of EMR systems, which streamline patient data management, enhance communication, and improve patient outcomes. Cerner allows real-time access to patient information, facilitating accurate decision-making. Another trend is the rise of mobile applications and telehealth, which have gained popularity, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling remote patient monitoring and virtual consultations (Dinh-Le et al., 2019).
Potential Challenges and Risks
These advancements come with challenges, such as data breaches from extensive EMR use. Cybersecurity is a significant concern due to the sensitivity of patient information (He et al., 2021). Additionally, interoperability issues can arise when integrating various technologies, leading to information silos and gaps in patient care.
Benefits and Risks
A benefit of these technologies is enhanced patient care through improved data accessibility and provider coordination. For instance, Omnicell ensures precise medication dispensing, reducing medication errors. However, a significant risk is data breaches, which could lead to unauthorized access to patient information, compromising confidentiality and trust.
Promising Trends
Artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems are promising trends for nursing practice. AI analyzes vast data quickly, providing predictive insights and supporting clinical decision-making. AI algorithms can predict patient deterioration, allowing timely interventions and potentially saving lives. This leads to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, and data management (Bajwa et al., 2021).
Conclusion
While healthcare technologies offer significant opportunities, they also pose challenges. Ensuring data safety, complying with legislation, and maintaining patient confidentiality are critical. Thoughtful integration of these advancements can lead to more efficient and effective patient-centered care.

Question
To Prepare:
• Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
• Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
Healthcare Information Technology Trends
• Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as the use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
** I work in a level 2 Hospital in the Surgical ICU. We have 3 ICUs, two of them whole 24 beds and the PICU has 16 beds. EMR system is Cerner, Omnicell for medication dispensing, and Bridge system for blood bank.
POST: a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.
