Selecting a Relevant Journal – Guidelines and Requirements for Manuscript Submission

Settling on the relevant journal for my project topic is based on a consideration of various aspects of the journal. For instance, the journal focuses on topics related to quality of care in nursing, investment in improving care quality, safety, and nursing care outcomes. Based on these considerations, The Journal of Nursing Care Quality (JNCQ) has been selected out of many, as the most relevant. The JNCQ is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Nursing Center, soon be under Lippincott. It majorly focuses on research on specific aspects of quality care, including issues and challenges faced by nursing leaders, cutting-edge examples and case studies, the latest innovations, and proven quality care strategies and solutions. The JNCQ targets nurses in practice and those in leadership roles within nursing care quality programs in the practice setting engaged in continuous improvement of healthcare services. It aims to support practicing nurses and nursing leaders in the improvement of quality and safety of patient care and the use of innovations in nursing through the provision of useful information on related areas such as patient safety, quality care, and the adoption and utilization of principles of nursing care quality within clinical settings.

The Journal of Nursing Care Quality (JNCQ) has clear guidelines for authors for all manuscripts. However, the specific guidelines for journal format, page limit, article sections, and abstract depend on the type of manuscript.  For instance, original research papers, manuscripts, and all types of review papers have a limit of 16 pages, including abstracts, manuscripts, and references, while quality improvement papers pages may vary based on requirements. Short articles have a maximum of 5 pages with no abstract. All papers are also required to strictly adhere to the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style (11th ed). Additionally, all manuscripts must have 3-5 keywords and disclosure of information related to conflict of interest, adherence to ethical standards of research, and research funding as established by the NIH and other research funding authorities. More details on the guidelines for authors and manuscripts can be accessed at https://edmgr.ovid.com/jncq/accounts/ifauth.htm.

An example of a recent article published in the Journal of Nursing Care Quality (JNCQ) is “Utilizing a Tailored Approach to Standardized Screening of Health-Related Social Needs,” authored by Wright et al. in the year 2024, focusing on improving social needs screening using recommended standardized questions within outpatient settings.
