Evolving Perspectives on Information Systems and Technology in Business

Evolving Perspectives on Information Systems and Technology in Business

Since the term started, my original idea of Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) has significantly evolved. Initially, I had a limited understanding of the two concepts perceiving them as technical fields dealing with hardware and software. This course so far has transformed that view by exposing me to a broader perspective, giving me a better understanding of the two concepts.

The relationship presented between IS and IT and how they integrate with business processes has helped change my understanding. Information technology involves software, computer systems, programming languages, and data processing (Bourgeois, 2019). It plays a significant role in communication networks, data management, and the organization of processes across the business. Information systems, on the other hand, deal with collecting, storing, processing, and distributing data to support business operations and interactions with customers and suppliers.

Additionally, the course has emphasized the strategic role of IT and IS in organizations. I have learned how businesses can leverage IT and IS to gain a competitive edge by improving their decision-making. By leveraging IS and IT, organizations can get timely and accurate data to make better decisions. This, in turn, enables innovation and enhances customer experiences. This perspective has increased my understanding of IT and IS beyond technical aspects by illustrating how they drive business growth.

In summary, the exposure to the various concepts and technologies throughout the course has broadened my understanding of Information Systems and Information Technology. I have also come to learn that IT and IS are interconnected to support organizations in their operations to shape business success and gain competitive advantages. IS and IT is a dynamic field that keeps changing, and I am excited to see how it would shape the future.
