Great work with your presentation, Devon. You have created an engaging and effective presentation to help understand GERD. The clear structure at the opening of the presentation gives it a logical flow, which makes it easier to follow through effortlessly. Additionally, providing an overview of GERD contextualizes the presentations and helps easily understand the condition and factors that make it an issue of concern and a health topic of interest, including what GERD is, its prevalence rate, costs of care, risk factors, and associated complications.

As you have noted, GERD has a high prevalence rate of an estimated 20% in the United States and across other Western countries. GERD also costs an estimated $20 billion annually. It has a significant impact on the quality of life and is a risk factor for other diseases and complications such as esophagitis, esophageal strictures, Barrett esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma (Maret-Ouda et al., 2020). These complications further add to the high cost of health associated with GERD.

To add on, although the first-line treatment and management of GERD usually involves the use of PPIs, more focus should be paid to addressing the lifestyle risk factors associated with the condition. For instance, considering that the major risk factors for GERD are lifestyle-related, such as BMI, alcohol use, smoking habits, and consumption of sweet, fatty, and spicy or fried foods and carbonated drinks (Nirwan et al., 2020), modifying such risk factors including lifestyle and eating behaviors can help achieve sustainable GERD management and prevention in the long term. However, since some risk factors are non-modifiable, such as age, genetics, and sex, a combination of both pharmacological and lifestyle modifications can help treat and manage GERD.
