I have worked under Mrs. JANE DK as my nursing leader. She always applied the Situational leadership style regardless of the situation. She had the flexibility to choose how much support she gave to each team or individual member, how involved or active she was in the teams, and the methods she used to inspire both individuals and groups. According to Deshwal and Ali (2020), situational leadership assumes that an effective leader does not remain static as situations change but changes their approach to leadership as the situation changes.

There are various principles of emotional intelligence evident in her approach to situational leadership. As an effective situational leader, she has evidently expressed high levels of self-awareness, empathy, and willingness to accept criticism and take responsibility.  By definition, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and show one’s emotions and feelings, recognize, interpret, and talk about the emotions and feelings of others, as well as utilize such abilities to manage and control personal emotions and feelings, as those of others (Lubbadeh, 2020).

By being self-aware, she has been able to tailor her approach to leading the team by evaluating the situation and evaluating her own capabilities, current emotions, as well as the abilities and emotions of the team to guide her decisions, actions to be taken, and efforts required to manage a situation. As self-awareness improves morale and self-transparency (Hartung, 2020), she has been able to adapt her approach to leadership by weighing her current abilities and those of the team against the nature of the situation at hand.

She also displays high levels of emotional intelligence by being empathetic and not being afraid of criticism. Good leaders are not afraid to be criticized (Christopher et al., 2020). As a nursing leader, she always accepted any form of criticism regarding her leaders, decisions, or actions regarding different scenarios in the workplace and showed actual concern and consideration for the opinions of others. Any further decisions and actions she made or took were shaped by such criticism and concerns of the team members.

Further, she has remained an effective nursing leader by adapting her approach to leadership based on the situations within the workplace. By observing the status of various situations and utilizing her high emotional intelligence, she has been able to provide support, guidance, and motivation appropriately, as well as help her nurse followers to manage their stress and impulses during decision-making and resolve any interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts.
