There are six leadership prototypes postulated by Goleman. They include visionary, coaching, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and commanding leadership styles (Brusseau, 2011). Regarding visionary leadership, the leader plays the role of inspiring followers by offering them a compelling vision for the future. Regarding the coaching leadership prototype, the leader pays attention to coaching followers to ensure they are offered all the necessary support to achieve their full potential. On the other hand, affiliative leaders prioritize the building of strong work relationships and the development of a harmonious work environment. Such leaders value open communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Democratic leaders involve all their team members in their leadership affairs. They seek to acquire opinions from their teams before engaging in critical decision-making. On the part of the pacesetting leadership prototype, there is a high standard for performance. Leaders expect their followers to demonstrate high levels of excellence and work ethics. In the last prototype, commanding leaders adopt an authoritative approach to guiding their followers. They offer clear instructions and expect total compliance with the instructions.

Despite the six prototypes above being comprehensive in approaching leadership, there can always be other types of leadership approaches that can be considered. An example of a leadership style that can be adopted is the servant leadership style. Notably, this leadership style prioritizes the needs of team members and pays attention to ensuring that the needs of team members are resolved. Some of the elements of the servant leadership style include active listening and emphasis on empathy. Another option for Goleman’s leadership prototypes could be a transformational leadership style. Essentially, this leadership style inspires followers by challenging the status quo. It encourages the followers to adopt creative approaches to attaining organizational goals. Overall, leadership is a broad concept that requires the combination of various leadership prototype features for successful team performance.
