Journal Entry- The Impact of Stress on Body Function

The article under consideration is “The impact of stress on body function: A review.”, illustrates the complex connections that stress forms with several physiological systems, such as the brain, immune system, and cardiovascular system. It focuses on the effects of stress on memory, cognition, and learning, showing the physiological effects on the hippocampus and amygdala levels and neurotransmitters (Yaribeygi et al., 2017). Additionally, it outlines that stress influences some of these functions of the immune system through hormones and varied neurotransmitters, which lead to a reduction in immunity and the rise of susceptibility to disease. Further, the article enumerates the deleterious effect of stress on the cardiovascular system by highlighting the role of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems activation in regulating heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular function, which, in turn, increases risks of cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. This article elaborates on the discussion of these issues and, therefore, helps put stress into its right perspective as it shows the multifaceted nature of the phenomenon and the extreme impact of stress on our physiology and, eventually, our overall health.

One of the points emphasized was how stressing forces the brain to cope with cognitive functions like memory, learning, and emotional processes of the brain using structural and functional changes in brain regions like the hippocampus and amygdala (Šimić et al., 2021). Additionally, I gained a deeper understanding of how stress can compromise immune function and cardiovascular health, highlighting the importance of stress management techniques in promoting overall well-being and resilience against illness.

The information presented in the article has underscored the significance of stress management techniques in maintaining both cognitive and physical health. Hence, I intend to incorporate techniques like mindful meditation, a regular exercise regimen, and effective time management into my daily schedule to help me cope with stress. On top of that, gaining full comprehension and having further research and exploration regarding the relationship between mind and body by adding physical practices like yoga into my daily routine can reduce stress (Shaw & Kaytaz, 2021). By implementing stress reduction methods, my objective is to improve my cognitive capacity, resilience, and immunity systems, as well as master life’s challenges.
