Enhancing Understanding of the Genitourinary System Through the iHuman Virtual Patient Encounter

The iHuman Virtual Patient Encounter involving Karen Floyd’s case of significant bowel obstruction (LBO) proved invaluable in strengthening my understanding of the gastrointestinal system. The incidence demonstrated LBO as a perilous situation where the colon mucosa is either partially or entirely closed, turning off everyday stool transportation. Such constant experiences mentioned the need for a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the large intestine and any conditions or diseases, like tumors, hernias, and inflammation, that may cause an intestinal blockage.

There are probably many figures involved in this incident, including gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal pain, distention, constipation, and vomiting, and radiological imaging such as a CT scan or X-ray. By understanding this link, the importance of identifying the signs and symptoms was reinforced and also made clear regarding which diagnostic tests were necessary. More than that, the management plan at hand happened to feature a mix of approaches, like bowel rest, nasogastric decompression, and intravenous fluids and may go through the surgical options in case the other methods were not successful and give hints to possess a panoramic view of treatment choices.

To make my knowledge more robust, I will use a case-based approach by reconsidering LBO experiments, using anatomical models and simulation visuals. I will also learn with my peers and specialists and try to review LBO cases in person to observe them in person. These methods will broaden my notions on LBO diagnosis, treatment (Das et al., 2021; Zumbach & Prescher, 2022), and healthcare education as well, and these will increase my ability to assimilate more information on the gastrointestinal system; this way, I will be more prepared for future clinical situations.
