Unveiling the Impact of Dialogue in The Latehomecomer

Unveiling the Impact of Dialogue in The Latehomecomer

Chapter 2 of The Latehomecomer describes the events before and after the author’s grandmother died. One of the elements in the story is dialogue. The writer uses a specific style to share her thoughts and experiences with the audience and develop the plot. For instance, the author uses descriptions to bring out the theme of violence in the story and help the audience connect with her by creating a picture of the setting and how vents unfolded in the selected setting. For instance, the quote, “The cries of children accompanied the falling of bodies to the ground. The bombs scattered the people. The earth blew up in their faces” (Yang, p.35), describes the violence that was being witnessed in the selected setting.

The use of descriptions of events tells the audience that the main theme of the book so far is violence influenced by specific turns of events. The descriptions also tell us that the book so far focuses on experiencing the hardships that people experienced from the violence and the nature of the violence. For instance, mentioning that the bombs blew up in people’s faces means that the violence included the use of weapons targeting to destroy lives. The description of events also enables the author to connect with her audience by allowing them to picture the events in the story’s setting. Therefore, the descriptions matter to the readers because they draw the audience’s interest in learning more about what happened after each event based on the picture of the setting created in their minds. Descriptions also teach the audience that describing how events unfolded can help the readers identify the story’s main theme and the main message that the author intends to pass to their audience.
