Effective classroom management requires assessment of the factors that negatively impact learning. In this case study, lack of motivation is the major factor that affects classroom management. The loss of motivation is a problem that affects a small group of learners. The affected students fail to complete assignments or respond and ask questions in class. Lack of motivation is caused by an inability to complete tasks, low confidence, poor communication, and poor relationships with the teacher (Mauliya et al., 2020). Motivation instills a sense of purpose and a positive attitude, which develops an enthusiasm for learning. Notably, motivation can either be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation results from an internal desire to achieve an objective. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is the desire to achieve an objective because it will produce a result.
According to the Center on Education Policy (2012), unmotivated learners can disengage other learners which can impact learning in the entire class. Teachers have a role in enhancing motivation levels within the classroom. The teacher should develop strategies that motivate the student to embrace learning. Rewarding exemplary results is a great way to enhance motivation among students. However, it provides extrinsic motivation which is a short-term solution as the students will only focus on the rewards. Charles & Cole (2019) suggest that discipline is the best form of motivation. Instilling discipline inspires intrinsic motivation which will push the learners to participate and persevere in less appealing activities. Highly motivated students are ready to learn and they also make teaching fun (Fligona et al., 2020). For this reason, it is essential that teacher focuses on achieving long-term motivation for the learner.
