According to Toyota (2016), the Hansei process involves reflecting on past actions, correcting mistakes, and identifying opportunities for improvement. Regarding the situation between Alice and Sharon Shrade, there are a few things I feel I would have done differently. Firstly, I would reflect on Alice’s performance objectively. Having worked for Netflix for over ten years, I would like to understand why she cannot catch up with the rest of the staff. She may be facing personal challenges or a mismatch of skills. I would also examine the company’s actions toward the employee. For instance, I may ask myself whether I provided her with enough support, including resources, feedback, and information she requires to perform her job (Dombrowski & Mielke, 2014). If there were shortcomings in the management approach, I would consider rescinding the decision to terminate her from Netflix.

Furthermore, I would explore alternative courses of action before terminating her. Some of the alternative actions relevant to Alice’s case include additional training, equipping her with professional development plans, and coaching (Dombrowski & Mielke, 2014). If these actions align with the company’s culture and policy frameworks, terminating her should be out of the table. Performance issues among employees will always be there, and if Netflix constantly terminates underperforming employees, the company may eventually scare the best talents.

In other words, they have not objectively and critically evaluated the project to find opportunities for improvement, or they did not stretch to meet (or exceed) their expected capacity.
