Why the U.S. Is Behind in Education
Despite the U.S. having a better reading ranking, the country has a below-average math performance. The results show that American students struggle to acquire effective skills in solving mathematical problems. Compared to other countries, the U.S. drags behind in math performance due to the strategies and techniques used in math classes. U.S. educators emphasize teaching students problem-solving formulas and procedures (Richards, 2020). However, other countries build their students’ creative thinking, which helps them evaluate and solve complex problems. U.S. teaching pedagogies make students incompetent to compete in international examinations compared to students from other countries. Higher-performing math countries promote technical learning, such as coding, in their math curriculum.
