Chronic Disease Burden in Miami- An Analysis of Diabetes and Hypertension

Chronic Disease Burden in Miami- An Analysis of Diabetes and Hypertension

The prevalence of chronic diseases has increased over the years in the United States. Most of the chronic diseases are associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. The prevalence of the diseases varies among different regions in the US. In Miami, Florida, the most common chronic diseases are cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common chronic disease in Miami. As per the 2019 data from the Division of Public Health Statistics and Performance Management, heart failure is the most common cardiovascular disease in the county. For every 100,000 people, there have been approximately 122,561 individuals being hospitalized due to heart failure(Florida Department of Health, 2019). Since heart failure is associated with several complications due to the inability of the heart to pump blood, high mortality rates of patients suffering from the disease have been reported.

Another common chronic condition in Miami is diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot adequately control blood sugar levels. In Miami, approximately 9.2% of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. For every 100,000 people in Miami, about 3,343 people have been hospitalized due to diabetes. Most of the patients have been hospitalized due to the complications of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, hospitalizations due to diabetes mellitus can be reduced if the complications of the disease are managed.

Overall, cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus are the top two chronic diseases in Miami, Florida. The two conditions have led to an increase in the number of hospitalizations of patients suffering from chronic illnesses. Moreover, several patients have died as a result of complications arising from the two diseases. There is a need to identify the major causes of the diseases with the aim of reducing their occurrence.
