Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation
The prevalence of mental health cases within my state has been on the rise compared to the incidents reported by healthcare organizations. According to the data in possession of John Hopkins University Hospital, 51.7% of adults living within the neighbourhood are overweight or obese. The data also shows that only 31.8% of adults live on a healthy diet composed of fruits, vegetables, and fresh produce. According to this report, 32.7% of adults living within this neighbourhood have met the Centers for Disease Control regulations on mental health fitness.
Interviewer: Tell us about a healthcare program within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
Interviewee: Psychiatric-mental health Nurse Practitioner
At Johns Hopkins, we have different Psychiatric mental health programs that bring together various stakeholders from the community, healthcare organizations, volunteer healthcare providers, psychologists, support groups, and registered mental health counsellors. The program is implemented for one year, with weekly sessions running for two hours per session. There are a total of 52 sessions during the year involving a group of 15 participants who undertake workout activities. Each participant provides personal weekly and monthly goals.
A total of $400,000 has been spent on this program since its inception. The expected outcome is to reduce the number of psychiatric mental health cases by 80% at the end of the program and also improve the mental health and well-being of the target population by 75%. The implementation of this design requires support from all stakeholders.
Interviewer: Who is your target population? Interviewee:
Our target population is adults with mental health conditions who require intervention programs to help them cope with lifestyle modification.
Interviewer: What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?
Interviewee:
Nurses at John Hopkins University Hospital play a crucial role in the design of the psychiatrist mental health program in that they help in the development of clinical pathways that promote a seamless flow of all deliverables in the programs. Nurses also provide training, education, and leadership on the participants can effectively take part in the programs to realize positive outcomes in terms of improved wellness and reduced cases of mental health. They also help in the enhancement of awareness and dissemination of knowledge to improve quality outcomes and provide quality care coordination (“American Nurses Association, n.d”). Their active involvement in these programs helps the target population to access the program by averting a shortage of nurses.
Interviewer: What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?
Interviewee:
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I am an advocate for patients’ needs and desires, especially when they are under anesthesia. In case a participant comes to the community-based weight reduction program with a request for bariatric surgery. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is charged with the responsibility of providing the patient’s family with accurate, precise, and complete information about the intended procedure. To give patient safety and quality outcomes a priority, nurses ensure they properly position themselves, prevent burn-out, and properly document all the procedures taking place (“American Nurses Association, n.d”). The nurses also respect patient autonomy and the right to self-determination by defending patients’ rights and interests to guarantee safety at all times (Gerber, 2018). Nurses can influence the design of the program by providing their opinions on how to build a holistic framework of the community-based weight reduction program so that it incorporates the individual and families into the interconnected community system.
Interviewer: What is the role of the nurse in the healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between the design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?
Interviewee:
Nurses always struggle to ensure that there are changes for better patient outcomes by employing their knowledge and skills in the improvement of healthcare prevention programs such as the community-based weight loss program. Their role in the implementation of this program is to promote an adaptable environment that provides the participants with an opportunity to continuously learn how to live a positive life with their mental illness. Using their skills and knowledge, nurses promote innovation implementation by convincing other employees to remain creative and innovative during the implementation of the program (Betz et al., 2016). They also apply their nursing principles and meta-paradigm to provide quality psychiatrists and mental health programs. As nurses, we are guided by our expertise, training, and experiences to provide patient-centered nursing care to patients enrolled in this program.
The role of nurses in designing and implementing a health promotion program involves giving ideas and opinions on the design of the implementation plan, scheduled tasks, and deliverables, as well as the number of sessions and duration the program should take (Milstead & Short, 2019). We also provide constructive input on how to realize the deliverables and goals of the program.
Interviewer: Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?
Interviewee:
Nurses play the most vital role in the implementation of psychiatric mental health programs. However, every mind is equally significant during the design and implementation of the program. Most importantly is that nurses do contribute to the design and implementation of psychiatric mental health programs by providing ideas on how to achieve transformative changes in an interprofessional team (Betz et al., 2016). They always involve a team-based approach to the design and implementation of the program. In this way, it is patient-centered and captures the needs of the participants across the care continuum; nurses also contribute to the design and implementation by providing a seamless flow of services that is accessible and affordable to promote quality care and patient outcomes (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).
