Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing at Workplaces

Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing at Workplaces

Introduction and Background

Nursing is a dynamic discipline in the field of healthcare. A lot of money is spent to ensure the production of high-quality medical-related research that may lead to rapid growth in the medical field. Many new drugs and nursing practices are being invented regularly. The main objective behind this research is to help doctors, nurses, and other medical practitioners provide the best care to patients. In addition to the continual use of traditional, well-established practices and procedures, nurses are solidly adopting evidence-based practices arising from innovative practices in a well-researched environment. Therefore, evidence-based nursing is defined as the gathering, processing, and executing of findings from research to improve clinical nursing practice, patient outcomes, or improve the work environment (Majid et al., 2011). Examples of evidence-based practices in nursing include infection prevention and control practices, the use of oxygen in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, non-invasive measurement of blood pressure in children, catheterization, and blood transfusion procedures.

What Are the Benefits of Using Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing?

EBP may benefit the nurses, patients, and the health care organization. For nurses, it provides them with scientific research in order to make well-formed decisions. By applying EBP, nurses will be updated on new protocols used in patient management. Nurses are also able to understand the risks and effectiveness of recommended tests or treatments. When nurses use EBP, they are able to involve their patients in the nursing care plan. Healthcare organizations, too, may benefit from EBP by eliminating outdated procedures and practices that may be costly in patient management, hence reducing the costs involved. The patients also may benefit from EBP by receiving high-quality care aiding survival rates.

How Do I See the EBP Being Implemented at My Workplace?

First, it is important to identify the appropriate resources required for implementation. These resources include online search engines and access to medical journals by the nursing staff. Ensure that computers with the Internet are available in the nursing units. Another vital resource for applying EBP in nursing is time. Ensure that the hospital administration sorts out the issue of nurse shortages so that enough nurses are available for EBP.

After ensuring the availability of resources, it is important to ensure that the nurses are trained on EBP and how to apply it in daily practice. It is important for institutions to invest financially in the implementation processes aimed at improving the quality of nursing practices. (Hockenberry et al., 2006). The next step is framing a clinical question that will help identify the problem. Nurses will then be involved in gathering the best evidence cited in journals and books. After getting evidence, the next step is applying it to clinical practice and assessing the results following the implementation. As EBP is applied in the hospital, it is important to identify and address the barriers that will affect the implementation process.

Conclusion

EBP in nursing care is the way to go in order to provide quality care. It is necessary to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills required for EBP. Although the sole purpose for conducting nursing research and EBP may seem different, incorporating the research findings should be a way forward for hospital managers to aid in the implementation of EBP.

According to the textbook, nurses in various settings are adopting a research-based (or evidence-based) practice that incorporates research findings into their decisions and interactions with clients. How do you see this being applied in your workplace?
