Policy Initiatives by the American Nurses Association – Health System Transformation
The American Nurses Association (ANA) promotes that all citizens have a right to receive quality healthcare. For many years, the ANA has taken advantage of its members’ experience to agitate for reforms in the healthcare sector. (Mery, Majumder, Brown & Dobrow (2017).
The ANA has been advocating for policymakers to acknowledge nurses’ value in the provision of healthcare of high standards. The concerns of nurses are critical to the advancement of public health. In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed, which created critical health benefits. This effectively protected persons against biased medical insurance policies. Many attempts have been made to repeal the PPACA. In particular, the ANA was instrumental in halting the passage of legislation in 2017 that would have undermined the existing healthcare delivery system, which impacts patients and nurses. In December 2016, the ANA delivered a letter to Donald Trump. This letter outlined its Principles for the Transformation of Health Systems. The principles included ensuring universal access to healthcare services for all citizens, optimizing primary as well as preventive services, supporting the use of technology in providing hospital services, putting in place mechanisms that will allow for affordable use of health services, and supporting individuals that cannot afford care, and ensuring there are enough skilled healthcare workers dedicated to providing quality services to the population.
In May 2017, ANA opposed the proposed American Health Care Act (AHCA); it argued that these reforms would put Americans’ health in danger, lead to the elimination of the Prevention and Public Health fund, and put into jeopardy the standards of healthcare given to the citizens.
