The data shows that between 2000 and 2015, the rate of lung and bronchus cancer per 100,000 individuals was prevalent among Blacks (including Hispanics), with a mean of 70.1% (SD = 6.7) and a median of 71.4%. A high variance for this group (45.4%) also indicates that the risk of African Americans being diagnosed with lung and bronchus cancer is high.

Whites (including Hispanics) at a Mean of 62.7%, a Median of 64.6 and an SD of 5.1 have the second-highest prevalence rate, followed by American Indian/Alaska Natives (Mean = 43.3 %; Median = 43.9 and SD = 5.3), and Asian/Pacific Islander (Mean = 38.5%; Median = 38.9; SD = 2.4). Hispanics have the lowest prevalence rate at a Mean of 31.5 %, a Median of 32.1, and a Standard Deviation of 2.9.

Based on the variance values, it is also clear that the risk of suffering from lung and bronchus cancer is high in the African American population (45.4%), followed by American Indian/Alaska Native (27.7%), whites (26.2%), Hispanics (8.4%), and lowest in the Asian/Pacific Islander (5.7%).

Summary and Descriptive Statistics

There is often the requirement to evaluate descriptive statistics for data within the organization or for health care information. Every year the National Cancer Institute collects and publishes data based on patient demographics. Understanding differences between the groups based on the collected data often inform healthcare professionals about research, treatment options, or patient education.

Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups. Refer to your textbook and the Topic Materials, as needed, for assistance in creating Excel formulas.

  • Once the data is calculated, provide a 150-250 word analysis of the descriptive statistics on the spreadsheet.
    • This should include differences and health outcomes between groups.
