Barriers to Advanced Nursing Practices
There are many barriers that nurse practitioners face as healthcare evolves with different circumstances. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a shortage of nurses in several cases; nurses have been observed leaving their fields because they fear for their lives, whereas others fear transmitting hospital-exposed viruses to their families and friends. In order to assist patients with their medical concerns, Telehealth has been effective and has grown significantly over the past year. There has been an increasing demand for nurses since they are frontline workers in providing medical services. Compared to other medical practitioners, nurses spend most of their time caring for patients and providing SBAR to physicians. NPS and RPs need to collaborate in providing leadership and guidance, which are essential n removing barriers to the high-quality care they provide (Clarin, 2007). The hard work being rendered by nurse practitioners can’t be ignored. In most cases, physicians don’t want to be bothered at night to attend to patients leaving the hard work to the NPS. NPS has been trained to take orders from physicians and administer medication as prescribed. When more nurses are being utilized, doctors will get the chance to provide critical services to more critical patients.
Advances practice RNs are more skilled and trained and are therefore supposed to practice to their full extent. Without the DEA number, nurse practitioners are not allowed to prescribe controlled substances. However, based on their training and education, they can identify patients who can be prescribed controlled substances based on their diagnostics. Most physicians have their own practices, which makes it hard for patients to receive all the care they need when hospitalized or at home. When nurses are available at healthcare facilities, doctors will provide quality care to their patients without being disturbed. Nurse practitioners are trained to assess the patient and administer medication appropriately (Hain et al., 2014).
Nurses play an important role in improving healthcare since they can operate doctor’s offices and healthcare clinics. In emergencies, nurses are most likely to provide life-saving medical services like first aid before the doctors can attend to the patient. It is not competition that nurse practitioners have with doctors. Still, it’s evident that nurses spend more time with patients and, therefore, can easily identify and diagnose the patient without seeking the assistance of a physician. Salaries that NPS receive are also a barrier to the services they receive since, in several cases, they provide the same service that physicians provide, but they end up receiving low pay.
Standardizing their salaries by increasing their pay will enable the nurse practitioners to be more motivated and hence render their services adequately (Clarin, 2007). Lastly, the lack of proper communication with nurses, especially when changes are implemented in healthcare services, is another barrier. Physicians and doctors, in most cases, don’t involve the nurses when developing a plan to make changes and only inform them when implementing. This results in resistance among the nurses (Hain et al., 2014). When there is proper communication whenever changes are made or in the formulation of plans to make changes that affect nurses, there will be less resistance hence the smooth operation of healthcare facilities.
