The Iowa model effectively implements evidence-based and best practices by assisting nurses and healthcare teams in translating clinical research findings into daily routines. The Iowa Model begins with problem identification (Brown, 2014). Nurses are encouraged to look for issues that could lead to lapses in patient care. These could include financial or even clinical matters. Triggers in new knowledge may also necessitate an investigation into a facility problem. A problem’s nurse team is then assigned to determine the problem’s priority in relation to larger institutional goals. The issue’s research is then identified and synthesized to determine whether the research base is significant. If the impact is substantial, a pilot change in clinical practice is implemented (Newhouse & White, 2005). This information is then used to determine whether the research findings can be implemented within the institution.

The ability of nurses to engage in constructive problem identification and research is critical to the successful implementation of clinical findings. This necessitates the use of well-trained nurses who stay current on current research. Obstacles to implementation may include uncooperative nurses, financial constraints in the institution, or a lack of management willingness to implement evidence-based practice.
