Why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN

Evidence-based practice is an essential component of a bachelor’s prepared nurse’s practice because it is the use of current best evidence to make patient care decisions. It is a clinical problem-solving approach that combines a review of the most relevant evidence, one’s own clinical expertise, and patient preferences and values. The use of evidence-based practice allows the healthcare provider to evaluate research, clinical guidelines, and other resources based on high-quality findings and apply the findings to practice (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, n.d.).

I will continue to educate myself on evidence-based practice and share my knowledge with those around me in order to continue integrating evidence into my practice and the practices of those around me. Through nursing journals and nursing organization meetings, I will continue to gain new evidence-based knowledge. A lack of staff buy-in could be an impediment to the sharing of this knowledge. To gain staff support for evidence-based practice, I would first bring on board the managers/leaders. Positive leadership behaviors have been linked to encouraging staff attitudes toward evidence-based practice, according to research (Halm, 2010).

Another way to stay on top of evidence-based practices and share them with those around me is to review new evidence-based guidelines on an annual or biannual basis to ensure that they are up to date with the most recent information. This can be accomplished through the review of policies and procedures. Policies and procedures are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that they reflect the most up-to-date evidence. All policy changes are communicated to staff in front of my face.
