Academic Success and Professional Development Plan

Academic Success and Professional Development Plan

The current healthcare system is changing in order to improve the quality of care provided. As nurses, we play an important role in revolutionizing the delivery of care services. Obtaining my BSN was only the first step in paving the way for further advancement in my career. I’ve decided to enroll in Walden University’s master of science in nursing (MSN) program to gain the necessary knowledge and skills in specialized nursing practice. Out of the available specialty options, my primary goal is to pursue a master’s degree in gerontology or psychiatry. Gerontology focuses on providing healthcare services to elderly patients, which has gained more market share in today’s healthcare system, whereas an MSN- PMHNP program primarily prepares nurses to provide a full spectrum of care to patients suffering from psychiatric disorders, including substance abuse issues and organic brain disorders (Endsley, 2017). I prefer to enroll in an MSN-PMHNP program because it aligns with my strengths and prior knowledge in caring for psychiatric patients.

As a result of an increase in mental illness cases such as depression and anxiety, the current healthcare system is overburdened with psychiatric patients. As a result, psychiatry healthcare specialists in all disciplines, including nurses, are in high demand. As a result, nurses in this field enjoy several advantages, including higher pay and more job opportunities. Furthermore, most of my coworkers have noticed my good communication skills and positive relationship with my patients, which is critical when caring for patients with psychiatric disorders (Vargas et al., 2017). During my clinical rotation in the psychiatry department during my BSN program, my preceptor noticed my keen insight and good relationship with patients suffering from various mental disorders. As a result, she mentioned in my report that the majority of the patients under my care had a good clinical outcomes. As a result, I find it very convenient and life-changing to concentrate on psychiatry in order to help patients suffering from mental illness. However, it is critical to note that the main challenge that psychiatric nurses face is developing a strong therapeutic relationship with patients suffering from mental illness and their families.

In terms of my professional life, I am excited to join the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). This organization was founded in 1986 to provide leadership in the promotion of psychiatric-mental health nurses, the improvement of the quality of mental health care services for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, and the shaping of healthcare policies related to improved mental health services (Delaney, Drew, & Rushton, 2019). All PMH nurses (RN), including baccalaureate (BSN), associate degree (ADN), and advanced practice, are eligible for APNA membership (APRN). Members of this organization work in a variety of healthcare settings, including inpatient, academic, community, and research settings, in both the private and public sectors and at federal and state levels. As a result of APNA makes it easier for nurses to advance their education and thus improve the quality of services provided to patients with mental illness; becoming a member of this organization will help me advance my career as well as advance my knowledge and skills in caring for psychiatric patients.
