Psychology is something that can be applied in everyday situations. However, many people are unaware of how helpful psychology is in their daily lives. Psychology, for example, can be used to analyze and better understand an individual’s social intelligence, emotional intelligence, academic intelligence, and so on. “I very much believe in the idea that psychology can help you in your everyday life,” says Dr Robert J. Sternberg, PhD. (para. 3). This course at Grand Canyon University taught me that the material we are studying is highly relevant to my life. This essay will examine how I can apply psychology in my personal, professional, and academic career.

When I examine my personal life from a psychological standpoint, it is easy to see how I can incorporate it into how I think and act daily. For example, finding the motivation to improve my physical health has always been challenging. However, after learning more about the psychological perspective on motivation, I know it has several components. The four motivational qualities are activating, directive, sustained, and distinct (Grisson & Gazzaniga, 2016). So, looking at these four different aspects of motivation makes it easier for me to understand them. As a result, it has become easier for me to self-motivate and encourage myself to exercise and eat healthier. In addition, now that I understand the various aspects of motivation, I make “to-do” lists for myself; this keeps me motivated, organized, and on top of my tasks.
While there are numerous ways to incorporate psychology into my personal life, there are also multiple ways to incorporate it into my professional life. In the summers, when I’m at home, I work in the Pro Shop at Meridian Valley Country Club. There are many moving parts when working in the Pro Shop, from answering phones to running and organizing tournaments. While many of the jobs we do in the Pro Shop are high-stress, it is easy to let work stress get to you and cloud your judgment. Conflict can quickly arise when working so closely and frequently with coworkers. Before taking this course, I had no idea why there was so much workplace drama or why coworkers often lashed out at each other. However, after learning more about the psychological underpinnings of the emotions we experience, I better understand myself and others. For example, I might not understand why a coworker or boss yells at me because I asked a question about something. However, after learning more about people’s emotions, I realized that it was probably not the question I asked that irritated them; they could have been stressed about something else, and I was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and they took their stress out on me.
Psychology is something else I can use in my academic career. Most of the courses I take at university require me to take tests. I need to use my memory to perform well on my tests. However, remembering things has always been a challenge for me. As a result, I’ve never been the best at taking tests. I never understood why I didn’t do well on tests and had no idea how to improve. Potts and Shanks claim that “in a final test of all words, generating errors followed by feedback resulted in significantly better memory” (2014, p. 644). This quote explains that the more mistakes we make, the better we remember information when we re-learn it after identifying the error. So, after learning more about memory in class, I realized that my brain might work differently when it comes to memorizing things. Moving forward, I will employ various memorization techniques to ensure that the information I need to remember is stored in my long-term memory to perform better on tests.
To summarize, psychology can be applied to many aspects of life, depending on how you view it. Psychology has significantly impacted my life because it has helped me better understand myself and others. Overall, psychology can be incorporated into every aspect of life to improve your own life and the lives of those around you.
