The Amtrak rail network is classified as a scale-free network. Such networks have less node connectivity. The nodes on the Amtrak network are the railway stations that allow travellers to alight or board trains. These nodes are connected to each other using links, which are the railroads. The entire network has limited connectivity from one node to another. The links that connect the nodes are clear and definitive. Thus, the level of robustness is dissimilar within the entire network (Verma & Zhang, 2020). This difference in robustness is due to the presence of multiple railroads that connect some of the stations while others have definite routes. Scale changes are not likely to affect the network, while the stability is not dependent on the number of stations within the network. The rail network is vulnerable to targeted attacks, while random attacks are not likely to impact the network adversely. (Li, 2005). The functionality of a particular railroad does not depend on the other’s state. Negative effects are profoundly reflected within the specific link. A targeted attack that is elaborate and involves multiple nodes is expected to have adverse effects on the network. There lies a possibility of losing functionality in the case of such attacks.

This information is important for resource allocation and the establishment of policies that ensure the protection of the critical nodes within the network. Key stakeholders can monitor nodes consistently to ensure that the network’s functionality is protected, resilience is boosted consistently through additional resources and security measures are revamped to ensure the mitigation of such attacks (FEMA, 1996). Due to the nature of the network, it is important to conduct a risk assessment for all nodes because each can be attacked independently, leading to interruption of activities. An analysis of the network allows the stakeholders to determine the resources that need to be allocated to each node depending on its level of vulnerability (Boudi, Ghazel, & El-Miloudi, 2016). The main objective is to boost the resilience and safety of all nodes.
