Factors Influencing Aging and the Health Impacts

Factors Influencing Aging and the Health Impacts

As people age, especially as they get past their seventies, their five senses (hearing, smell, taste, sight, and touch) tend also to decline. Some of the factors thought to play an important part in ageing include physical activity, diet and nutrition, genetic inheritance, and the environment. Because of these ageing factors and a weakened sensory system, elderly people tend to suffer from chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, lung cancer, heart disease, and so on.

# 3 Overview: Most of us fear that our health will decline as we age. We fear the pain and inconvenience and how it may affect our ability to perform tasks and remain at home, however there is much variation in how we age because of our genetic inheritance, nutrition and diet, physical activity, and the environment. The ageing process is gradual and can begin as early as our twenties – progressing more rapidly after age 70 or 80. All of us experience some sensory loss with age, such as a decline in vision, auditory function and balance. However, age-related declines are not always dramatic or inevitable, and the elimination or postponement of chronic diseases associated with old age is rapidly changing with the growth of medical technology and there is increasing recognition given to environmental factors of stress, nutrition, and exercise in disease prevention.
