Impacts of NASW Ethical Standards on a Social Worker’s Research

Other Ethical Standards and Their Impact on Social Work Performance of Research

Regarding the ethical standard on conflict of interest, a social worker should be alert and avoid conflicts of interest that would interfere with the professional discretion exercise and impartial judgment (NASW, 2022). They must inform clients when a conflict of interest arises or if there is any potential for it to determine a course of action to resolve it. This standard is in relation to the fact that social workers may have conflicts of interest arising from their professional, emotional, financial or reputational advancement interests. In addition, these may also arise from circumstances where social workers experience repelling or compelling values about the same matter (Sobočan, Bertotti, & Strom-Gottfried, 2019). A social worker may be found in a compelling topic, such as sex offenders, yet there are limited opportunities, support, and accolades in this area. In this case, the social worker would be forced not to take unfair advantage and further their business, political, religious, or personal interests.
