A Study that compares How Users and Non-Users of Facebook Compare in Terms of Body Dissatisfaction
Stronge et al. (2015) conducted a study comparing Facebook users and non-users in terms of body dissatisfaction.
Description of Everything Observed or That Can Be Remembered
The authors focused on obtaining data on the participants’ age, income, gender, level of education, employment, income, and ethnicity. Regarding body satisfaction, the participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire whose responses ranged between 1, which stood for very inaccurate, and 7, which stood for very accurate. Yes or no responses were coded as 1 and 0, respectively.
Analysis
The data used was qualitative, and ordinal values were used. Given that the authors needed to grade or rank the data, using ordinal values was the most appropriate for the study. The authors used descriptive statistics to analyze the data. They estimated the mean and standard deviations of the data and used Bayesian methods to analyze the data. The Bayesian method is said to allow for the estimation of the parameters as well as the intervals, hence allowing for a more informative and intuitive indication of the possible distribution for every parameter (Stronge et al., 2015). The data was presented in tables, which were used appropriately, making it easier for me, as the reader, to understand the information presented.
Reflection
From the data analysis, the results presented were logical. The authors were able to confirm their hypotheses from their results. For instance, they confirmed that Facebook users recorded reduced body satisfaction than non-users. Whereas the implications of the study were not included, the strengths, limitations, and future recommendations for the study were made. These are relevant to the current study given the high rate of mental health problems among individuals in the era of social media, and the study can be beneficial for furthering information in the area. Generally, this article is highly recommended. It can offer insight into how individuals need to go about using social media platforms, as excessive use might be detrimental to their mental health, as recorded in the overall body dissatisfaction among young users.

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS
Identify a research study in your field. Feel free to use the ones referenced in the discussions or your literature review.
A critique of the research article’s Analysis section:
What type of data was used? Do you think this was the most appropriate data for this study? Why or why not?
How did the researchers analyze the data? What sort of statistics were provided?
How did the researchers present the data (e.g., charts, tables, figures, etc.)? Were they used appropriately? Did they help you better understand the analysis?
A critique of the Results section:
Are the conclusions about the results logical? Are the implications, limitations, and recommendations for further research included?
Are they relevant to the current study and appropriate for furthering the literature in that area?
Based on your understanding of research methods, provide an overall statement of your analysis. Would you recommend this article to someone who might benefit from the information? Explain how it might (or might not) be applicable in practice.
The weekly entries will be marked as complete/incomplete. However, you may receive feedback on your entries from the instructor. You’ll submit your completed journal at the end of the course for a final grade.
