Social Work Approaches to Client Engagement-A Case Study Involving Financial Exploitation by a Family Member

The video selected is one involving financial exploitation by a family member. The video shows a family member (niece to an older adult) who exploited the older adult financially and isolated her from the rest of the family members (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2022).

Helping the Client

As a social worker, I would help link the client to the required parties, such as the financial institution and the local authorities, to assist in dealing with the financial exploitation. I would also help the client obtain the necessary support from another well-audited family member or other personnel who can help with assisted living arrangements. Further, I can also help the client deal with the trauma associated with financial exploitation by a close family member (Hill, 2020).

Engaging the Client

I would meet with the client in an environment that she is comfortable in, preferably her home, and in the presence of someone that she is also comfortable with. I would then gauge the client’s state and determine whether she might need additional help from a psychiatrist to deal with the problem. I would ask her questions like, “How do you feel about your niece exploiting you? Would you like to receive help from trusted personnel in managing your finances?”

Potential Resources

I would ensure that the client has access to a psychiatrist, if necessary, to help deal with the aftermath of the financial exploitation. In addition, with the consent of the client, I would also link her up with resources like assisted living, as specific individuals can be sent to help her manage her finances and daily activities in her home environment. This will help her feel safer in her home.
