Ranking of investigation styles in order of effectivity

  1. Standard reactive

This style involves the community in the investigation process. In this, much more data can be collected, making it easier to control criminal acts and at the same time strengthen relationships between security personnel and the community.

  1. Discovery Enforcements

This investigation method is only effective when suspects have already been identified. Given it’s mode of application, the method can be less helpful as criminals in the streets cannot be investigated (Brandl, 2017).

  2. Reinforcement patrol

Here, investigators go to crime hotspots and try to observe behaviors so that they can identify criminal activities. Many criminals can be identified through its application. However, investigators can be easily identified, and a shift in the position of acts can happen.

4. Regulatory inspections

Here, inspections are conducted on criminal suspects to find evidences of the crime. This may not be effective for drug trafficking as people who do the transactions are majorly sent by those in higher ranks in the crime chain; hence, not all criminals can be arrested.

  1. Major Cases

In this style, investigators use analysis of past significant cases to collect information for suspected criminal act. This kind of criminal investigation requires procedural crimes and may not be of benefit when used to find information useful for arresting street drug traffickers.

6. Passive notation

Although criminals may be identified, the data collected may be inaccurate as someone may frame the other based on their personal relationships. Wrong individuals may get arrested leaving the criminals behind to continue trafficking drugs, hence most ineffective.

The roles of detectives

Detectives’ duties include gathering criminal facts for investigation. These include witnesses and suspects interviewing, observing criminals and examination of the crime evidence (Bennett, 2015). This is unlike in the case of television shows where detectives are often on the ground to realize in case there is any criminal act going on, arresting suspects and collecting the crime evidence for preservation. From this unit, I have learned that detectives’ main role is to establish proof against suspects of crimes as well as compile reports about the crimes committed and not to find criminals, arrest them and identify areas of criminal activities as shown in the cases of TV shows.
