Navigating Social Work Levels- Integrating Policy Practice into Micro Mezzo or Macro Roles

Macro-social work is a level of social work that focuses primarily on communities at large and systems-level roles (Brueggemann 2013). After my reading, I realized that macro social workers perform in very diverse fields; for example, they can be found in roles like community-based education programs, non-profit organizations, program development, and social work research, to name a few. In these roles, macro-social workers can, therefore, be found in various places, such as advocacy groups, government agencies, think tanks, and non-profit organizations (Brueggemann 2013). Additionally, in their work, macro-social workers tend to regularly collaborate with larger teams of government employees, advocates, analysts, activists, researchers, among others. I find macro-social work to be extremely necessary for every community. This is especially because of its significant role in changing policies and laws and fighting against any unfair economic or governmental practices. This way, stronger communities and the provision of a better quality of life is guaranteed for our communities. Moreover, my previous thoughts were that social work is a grass-root-operated career, but after reading, I learned that social workers also work at global scale levels handling issues like human trafficking crises (Brueggemann 2013).

It is crucial that macro-social workers be familiar with all other levels of social work, i.e. mezzo and micro social work. This is because for a macro-social to be able to advocate for policy or law changes, they have to be familiar with the social issues that require these changes. Subsequently, for macro-social workers to be familiar with issues such as challenges affecting children in foster care, they have to conduct investigative work (Brueggemann 2013). The investigative work is conducted by micro and mezzo social workers. Hence, the macro-social worker must perform both intermediate and personal levels with their communities.
