Exploring Alternative Methods of Preventative Healthcare- Benefits Limitations and Integration into Patient Care
Preventive care includes measures put in place to decrease the risk of getting an infection or a disease. It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to ensure patients and clients are healthy without having to take medications. This, therefore, calls for alternative methods of prevention. Examples of alternative preventive measures include spiritual care, music therapy, fitness therapy, and pet care. From the WHO definition of health, the spiritual well-being of an individual plays a big role in his/her health. According to Cone & Giske (2018), spiritual health gives an individual an inner feeling of peace and hope. Better spiritual care allows the patients to have positive thoughts therefore improving their well-being and preventing their health status deterioration. However, this method can only be applied to adults who have a better understanding of spirituality and not children.
The second method that can be useful is the use of music therapy which involves using music to address a patient’s health issues. Music is believed to be actively engaging the brain and making the patients forget about the pain they are undergoing hence quickening recovery. In addition, it is also believed that music soothes and calms the mind, making individuals view things positively and improving their health without sung medication. According to Gramaglia et al. (2019), it was found that music therapy reduces anxiety and depression among cancer patients, and hence, it is recommended that it be applied to patients with chronic illnesses. Unlike the spiritual method, music therapy can be applied to patients of all ages since all age groups tend to enjoy music, and there are varieties from which appropriate music can be selected.
Lastly, fitness and wellness can be other important alternative preventive measures. All lifestyle diseases are preventable through exercise. For instance, in an article by Bushman (2020), it has been proven that exercise and physical activity help in the prevention of chronic lifestyle diseases such as hypertension. Exercise can be applied to all age groups, including both males and females.
