Government Responsibility During Economic Crisis

Government Responsibility During Economic Crisis

One of the responsibilities of the government during an economic crisis is setting policies that guarantee the survival of citizens, such as reducing the costs of basic commodities. The government should also reduce the cost of housing and adjust the terms regulating the relationship between a tenant and a landlord. For instance, the government may increase the grace period that the landlord should give the tenant before the landlord closes the house or orders the tenant to evacuate. Another responsibility is to reduce income tax to avoid putting too much on employed citizens who rely on their survival to meet their needs as well as the needs of their families and dependents. Another responsibility is to reduce the cost of health care to ensure that all citizens can afford healthcare services. According to Cummins et al. (2011), the government is responsible for creating jobs during an economic crisis. It should also provide free healthcare services and relief to citizens. For instance, during the current COVID-19 pandemic, many people have lost their jobs while others have had to close their businesses due to economic loss. The government should, therefore, provide free healthcare services to ensure that citizens get a free consultation and free medicine. The government also has a responsibility to reduce its expenditures so that there is a substantial amount of money circulating in the economy (Haeffele & Storr, 2020). For instance, the government should not initiate new projects such as infrastructure development until the economic crisis is over to avoid overburdening taxpayers because there would be high expenditure and limited revenue.

Another responsibility is facilitating trade to increase revenue generated from trade. The government should set favorable policies that encourage traders to export and import goods from other countries to generate revenue through trade and maintain the availability of goods required by citizens. The government should also set policies that encourage foreign investors to invest in the country hence creating investments that generate revenue, such as manufacturing companies and real estate. The government should also provide clean water for citizens, especially those in the low-income category, to promote healthy living and prevent diseases that could arise from poor hygiene and the consumption of dirty water.
