Inequality between African Americans and white Americans is a significant issue affecting black people’s economic and social welfare. For centuries, white people have deemed black people inferior, and the notion is portrayed through slavery. In this case, Americans enslaved black people because they believed that black people were inferior to white people and did not deserve any rights. Although America abolished slavery and the United States government enforced equality laws, African Americans still face employment inequality. As the article reveals, black people experience higher unemployment rates than white people, and in some cases, white people earn more than black people on the same job and with the same qualifications.

Based on the article, stratification between white Americans and African Americans significantly affects black people’s economic welfare. In this light, it is difficult for black people to access quality education because they are trapped in a web of poverty. Most African American families in the West stem from enslaved people and, as such, are stuck in poverty. Since parents do not have well-paying jobs, they cannot afford good schools and college education for their children (Weller, 2019). Moreover, most young adults in the black community are responsible for taking care of their siblings and other household chores, making it difficult to concentrate in school. Some African American young adults also take jobs to supplement the family’s income. On the other hand, white Americans are privileged since parents can easily get good jobs and afford good schools. The situation secludes black people from poverty for generations.

Discrimination is also a significant issue in American society since, despite their educational accomplishments, black people still experience lower employment rates. A white person has a higher chance of getting a job than a black person, even with the same educational accomplishments (Weller, 2019). The discrimination stems from the stereotypes that American society links to black people. For instance, the Amarna society argues that black people are violent and more prone to committing crimes. Such serotypes bear significant problems, such as police brutality, which has claimed numerous African American lives. Due to the stereotypes, many African Americans are imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. The employment industry is no different. Employers prefer white employees, arguing that black employees are more susceptible to violence and bad behavior. However, this is a misconception since although black people make up for the majority of those incarcerated for drug dealing, white people use drugs at a similar rate as black people (Torres, 2018). Hence, society only discriminates against black people because of their skin color.

Employment inequality and prejudice are also a significant issue since African Americans work for less pay with fewer benefits and experience higher job instability than white people. In this light, since it is difficult for African Americans to get white-collar jobs, they opt for blue-collar jobs, which are less stable. The inequality stems from slavery since African Americans undertook menial jobs for no pay. In modern society, slavery continues, but today, African Americans are secluded in low-paying jobs with fewer benefits than White Americans. Moreover, many white employers are prejudiced against African American employees, seeing them as servants who do not deserve any rights or pay. As a result, African Americans do not have job security, and in many cases, employers violate their rights as workers.

As the article reveals, white people earn more than black people, and African Americans experience higher unemployment rates. The situation is due to discrimination, stratification, inequality, and prejudice, which stems from slavery. For centuries, white Americans viewed African Americans as inferior, and although slavery is illegal, they project the notion through employment inequality. To solve the problem, American society should view African Americans as their equals and treat them equally.
