Ethical Considerations in Business Scenarios- Reflection and Analysis
First, the supervisor should advise Pat not to rush into publishing the research at a conference chosen by him if it was not ready. Clearly, the results were not prepared, and Pat could only anticipate their availability by the time the conference was held. This presents an ethical dilemma as the choice may have been informed by the supervisor wanting to attend the conference, which is an unethical issue for the researcher. Additionally, due to the rush, Pat constructs a vague research method that the supervisor edits to obtain a more impressive output. However, this should not have been done as the resultant piece depicts a method different from the actual procedure used. This births an ethical dilemma for both sides regarding the depiction of the research methodology. Though Pat is uncomfortable with the edited methodology, he is obliged to take it as it is more clear. The supervisor is also faced with a dilemma because editing the section presents unethical behaviour, while Pat’s research methodology is sceptical and may not warrant consideration.
Scenario two
Lauren’s first alternative is going ahead to choose a research topic based on her interests and the needs of consumers. In topic selection, the main ethical dilemma encountered is the sponsorship dilemma. It is unethical to choose a research subject based on its appeal to the sponsors as it furthers their interests and, therefore, is more likely to achieve funding. Research is based on solving societal issues rather than relying on the researcher’s proficiency in the selected area to obtain applicable results. Lauren should also depict the research genuinely. Here, the ethical dilemma encountered is reflected in the research topic. She may attempt to inflate the significance to appeal to the reviewing board to ensure the research is not squashed out for lack of potential commercial benefit. However, I opine that what matters most is presenting work with valid and credible results that can be replicated no matter the funding gained. Conclusively, necessary research proposals will always suffice eventually, regardless of the timelines.
