NACA Contributions in Structural and Aerodynamics
The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was formulated in 1915 with a core objective of supervising and directing scientific study and research into challenges facing the aviation field for practical solutions (NASA, 1995). After 25 years of its foundation, the committee became one of the world’s premier organizations in aeronautical research. NACA’s contributions to structural and aerodynamic research have been phenomenal, including the facilitation of aeronautical research laboratories. The committee extensively contributed to the expansion of facilities and personnel that advanced aeronautical research before World War II. Before the war, NACA embarked on conducting basic research on aerodynamics and flight under unique partnerships with military planners and other researchers within the industry. NACA’s fundamental research agenda in the 1920s and 1930s provided a stable foundation for its wartime obligations. The practical solutions to challenges guided the organization in its approach to wartime.
Among NACA’s major contributions to structural research was in establishing solutions to surviving water impacts. By 1943, military organizers were agonized and discouraged by the loss of aircrew over vast ocean areas, particularly the Pacific Ocean. The planners requested NACA to find ways that the aircraft could better withstand the impacts of water. NACA, in joint partnership with the army, embarked on intensive research at Langley (NASA, 1995). After a series of tests, NACA confirmed that the structural components and other vital information on the aircraft’s bomb bay doors were effective in preventing such losses. This information was sent to aircraft manufacturers across Pacific and European theaters, which helped save the lives of countless aircrews henceforth. These are among the several phenomenal research contributions of NACA in structural and aerodynamics research.
