Picasso – We Should All Go Through Life Like Children
When Picasso says that we should all try to go through life like children, he means that we should be unaffected by the world’s beliefs and cultural impressions. Children have purity, honesty, and unrestrained imagination because they are unaffected by the generalities of life. Therefore, going through life like a child means that everyone should tap into their inner child and create art with restrictions. By tapping into one self’s inner child, you can truly express yourself creatively without limits. As a painter, Picasso might have meant that while creating masterpieces, we should learn to break the fundamental rules of imitating the work of the masters. Instead, we should take good ideas and express our concepts creatively. In short, Picasso’s statement is intended to make us original and cut loose the societal restrictions.
A piece of art that I feel expresses Picasso’s statement is Aspects of Negro Life: The Negro in an African Setting, 1934 by Aaron Douglas. African dancers express themselves ecstatically in this piece of art, surrounded by drummers and tribe members. There is a small ankh-like figure in the artwork, an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol meaning the key of life. Aaron’s art imitates the actual world and has an Egyptian style from Picasso’s influence (Janaro, 2016). Aaron’s is similar to Picasso’s belief in representing objects as if they were seen from different angles simultaneously (Desborde, & Marshall, 2016). Aaron’s work also illustrates an aspect of social realism, just like Picasso’s paintings. Aaron’s work was also influenced by how Cubism forced a viewer to reconsider his view on reality and his belief his art stood on its superiority and showed the world a new perspective. This painting incorporates the idea of Africanism and reveals the painter’s independence to express his inner self through colours and views.
