My view of the Social Security programs
In my opinion, social security programs are necessary because they offer a foundation of retirement protection for a large number of Americans. Many people face a hard time after retirement if they cannot plan for their retirement period because there is no source of income during that time, and they cannot get employed. It is, therefore, necessary to have social security programs because they encourage personal saving and private pensions, hence securing a good life after retirement. The programs are also necessary because they serve as a vital source of income for low-income individuals with less opportunity to earn pensions and save, including minority groups who experience higher poverty rates in old age and their working lives. The programs are, therefore, essential in reducing the economic disparities between seniors of color and white seniors.
How this research influenced my views
The research influenced my views because I reviewed statistics demonstrating the significance of social security programs. For instance, the research enlightened me on how old people rely on social security programs for survival based on the statistics indicating that for about half of seniors, the programs offer at least 50% of their income, and for 1 in 4 seniors, the programs offer at least 90% of their income (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 2020). Statistics also indicated that around 4 in 10 Americans aged between 65 and older would be below the poverty line without the benefits from social security programs. The research also influenced my views by demonstrating the role of the programs in family welfare. Statistics discussed by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (2020) indicated that in 2019, almost 6 million children below 18 lived in households that got their earnings from social security. This demonstrates that there are many beneficiaries of social security programs and their lives depend on being able to access the programs.
