Reflection on Thasya Video
How has Thasya’s inclusion positively impacted both her and her peers?
Thasya is a student diagnosed with autism, a learning disorder that affects a student’s learning, communication, and behavior. Thasya expresses different behavior from her fellow students. She encourages an inclusive learning environment since the teacher has to attend to all students’ learning needs, including Thasya. Learning with special educational needs. The inclusive environment promotes Thasya’s knowledge development. Thasya uses a ‘talk box,’ an augmentative communication device, which helps her connect the learning concept through pictorial representation of information (Habib, 2012). Thasya’s inclusion also fosters an interactive and participatory atmosphere with her peers. The students confront her to touch and interact with the ‘talk box,’ fostering togetherness. The students also enjoy playing with Thasya despite her learning disability, which fosters their social development. The students engage in common activities, encouraging knowledge development. Also, the students engage in jokes activities presented through the argumentative communication device (Habib, 2012). Thasya’s inclusion also promoted the training and education of educators to gather effective skills to teach and integrate learning concepts and ensure Thasya’s learning needs are attended to in a common learning environment with students without learning disabilities.
What role does AAC play in Thasys’s inclusion?
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) promotes an interactive, inclusive learning environment for all students. The teacher engages students in music lessons to foster Thasya’s learning. Thasya likes music as a way to express what she feels. The teacher structures learning content in pictures, which helps Thasya to associate and understand the learning aspects. When she is using the ‘talk box,’ she touches pictures that convey the information she intends to communicate. AAC also promotes verbal communication development. The AAC tool also facilitates speech cognition. The argumentative communication device engages Thasya in quizzes, which helps her assess her understanding of the skills taught.
