Video Reflection – Onset and Rime
The video depicts that onset and rime are smaller sound units within a syllable. The video confirms that students can recognize onsets and rimes once they can segment words into syllables. The onset is the first consonant blended on a syllable, while the rime consists of the vowel and the other part of the phonemes (REL Southeast, 2016). The video also aligns with my prior knowledge of onsets-rimes, a precursor skill to phonemic awareness in letter sounds (Foorman et al., 2016). When teaching blending and segmenting onsets and rimes, an educator should first demonstrate by providing aligning examples. In blending, the teacher gives two parts of a word and asks the students what words the two parts form. For instance, /b/ and /at/ to form bat. On the other hand, in segmenting onsets and rime, the teacher gives a word and requests the student to identify the initial consonant sound and the other part of the wording for rime. For instance, ‘book’ is segmented as /b/ and /ook/. From prior knowledge of teaching onsets and rime, a teacher should provide numerous examples illustrating how to blend the onsets and rime before giving the students an exercise to practice alone.
The video provides affirming information on how to teach onsets and rime. Hence, it does not depict any controversial details. Moreover, the video demonstrates practical evidence of what educators need to enhance effective learning in phonemic awareness. A learner needs to understand how to blend syllables in a word to blend onsets and rie more effectively. An educator should coach the students in the steps involved in identifying onsets and rime to implement the skills acquired more effectively. Providing relevant examples increases students’ understanding and ability to incorporate and acquire skills in solving related problems without many challenges. Educators should observe students’ performance in specific activities to identify areas that need more enforcement.
