Reinventing HR Responsibilities
The role of human resource managers has evolved over the past decade because of the integration of technology into human resource management functions and the expansion of organizations into global markets. This report analyzes the top 5 skill sets/competencies that HR professionals need to be successful today and in the future, as well as the two tasks added to the general job description of an HR Generalist.
Competencies HR Professionals Need to be Successful Today and in the Future
One of the top 5 skill sets HR professionals need to succeed today and in the future is interpersonal skills. According to Zhang (2018), interpersonal skills include understanding others, self-awareness, and recognizing and tuning emotions. The second skill set is adaptability skills. The current work environment is subject to disruptions that could influence employee behaviour. Therefore, HR professionals need adaptability skills to effectively support and manage employees during change. HR professionals also need technological skills to be successful today and in the future. According to Amesho et al. (2021), organizations are embracing technology to remain competitive. Therefore, HR professionals should be able to use technological platforms and tools to complete their roles within the workplace. The fourth skill set that HR professionals should have is analytical and reporting skills to accurately analyze and interpret data and derive insights that can be used in strategic management and decision-making. HR professionals also need good communication skills to communicate organizational expectations to employees and effectively resolve grievances.
Responsibilities Added to the General Job Description for an HR Generalist
According to Vulpen (2023), the job description of an HR Generalist differs in each organization based on local employment regulations and laws. The two responsibilities added to the general description for an HR Generalist include defining the organizational structure that aligns with the organization’s needs and aligning the organization’s values with employee behaviour. HR Generalists are expected to ensure that the organization has a productive work environment by influencing employee behaviour and creating an ideal organizational culture that enables employees to meet the organization’s goals.
Conclusion
The HR profession is among the professions currently being influenced by technological advancements and disruptions in the business environment. Therefore HR professionals need interpersonal, adaptability, technological, analytical, reporting, and communication skills to be successful today and in the future. HR professionals should also be prepared to take on extra responsibilities, such as defining the organizational structure that aligns with the organization’s needs and aligning the organization’s values with employee behaviour.
