The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is bifurcated into two distinct branches, namely the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).

The sympathetic nervous system serves as the organism’s “fight-or-flight” reaction and is triggered during periods of stress or danger. The physiological response involves increased cardiovascular activity, respiratory rate, and metabolic output, thereby priming the organism for action (OpenStax, n.d.; Saladin et al., 2015). Furthermore, it elicits pupillary dilation and decelerates the digestive system and salivary excretion. Conversely, the peripheral nervous system assumes responsibility for functions about repose and nourishment in periods of relaxation.
