The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is such an organization that has impacted global healthcare. Founded in 1991, IHI is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to improve healthcare across the globe. It prides itself on providing resources and tools valuable in enhancing global health to partner organizations. This paper details the impact of the IHI’s Tripple and Quadruple initiatives on the Druid City Hospital (DCH) in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Part 1: IHI Triple Aim Goals

The IHI Triple Aim goals embody an optimized healthcare system that recognizes the significance of healthy communities in local, state, and national development. Introduced in 2007, the IHI Triple Aim framework allows an elaborate assessment of quality improvement measures in healthcare and can be used by various care organizations to optimize their care approaches. Regarding improving population health, various levels of government have been steadfast in fronting measures for improving population health, such as enhancing access to healthcare and health resources. There has, however, been a challenge in lowering the per capita cost of healthcare. The cost of healthcare in the U.S. remains high, with soaring prices of medicines (Buntin, 2021). This goal is yet to be achieved and will only be achieved if the federal government commits to establishing policies that will effectively guide the price of medications and other health services (Buntin, 2021). Thus, it is necessary that lawmakers make it an agenda to lower the cost of healthcare in the U.S.

Part II: Evaluation of Application of IHI Triple Aim Goals Application in Your Organization

Priding itself as a premier healthcare institution, the DCH has been at the forefront of implementing the provisions of IHI. Regarding the improving patient experience dimension, the hospital has developed measures to improve patient experiences and satisfaction with the care process. Through its quality policy statement, DCH encourages its employees to provide the best care to its patients. It has also rolled out a master plan that requires all caregivers to be educated on patient communication, cultural competency, and conflict resolution mechanisms. The hospital conducts periodic surveys to measure its success in enhancing patient experiences. The outcomes of these surveys have been used to inform areas requiring improvement.

Regarding the dimension of improving population health, DCH has continuously engaged communities in Tuscaloosa County in various health improvement campaigns. It routinely conducts medical camps and community outreach programs aimed at educating communities on health preservation. This goal can be measured by assessing how communities adopt various health resources in response to community education and health promotion campaign exercises.

Lastly, the dimension of reducing the per capita cost of healthcare cannot be achieved at the organizational level. This is because several factors beyond the organization interplay in driving healthcare costs. The organization does not determine issues such as medication pricing. However, DCH remains dedicated to providing excellent care that is cost-effective and affordable.

Part III: IHI’s Quadruple Aim

The IHI’s quadruple aim builds on the provisions of the Triple Aim. It adds the dimension of improving the well-being of the care team to the dimensions of the Triple Aim. This framework recognizes the significance of healthcare providers in patient and community health. It emphasizes the need to improve the well-being of caregivers to optimize the care services they provide to their patients. Improving the well-being of healthcare providers remains a priority because of their role in health promotion and preservation. Nundy et al. (2022) note that improving the well-being of healthcare professionals enhances their mental and physical ability to serve their patients. It enables them to provide quality services to their patients and minimizes errors due to poor clinical judgment. Integrating this dimension is thus necessary for overall quality improvement advances. Therefore, the IHI’s Quadruple Aim should be used as the standard for all care organizations.
