Breakout Session Blog- Looking Back
What do you feel are the most important pieces of information that you have learned?
I have come across much valuable information during this study period, but two pieces stood out the most. The first piece of information I have taken away is that ethical consideration in research is significant. It is not only necessary because it is mandatory and can lead to litigations, but it is also vital since it protects the research participants. Secondly, I have also gathered that there are different periods in sociological research, and in each era, sociologists had different approaches to sociological research (Sassenberg & Ditrich, 2019). Within this context, I have also learned that psychological research has changed.
How has learning about classic and contemporary social psychology issues and research informed your understanding of real-world issues and problems?
After learning about classic and contemporary social psychology, I understand that real-world issues change repeatedly. They are also influenced by the social, political, and economic environment of the time (Sassenberg & Ditrich, 2019). For instance, social psychology issues in the 1940s after the Second World War are very different from social psychological issues today during the era of social media.
Can you find any trends in social psychological research that can be used to improve social welfare?
The trends in social psychology research that can be used to improve social welfare are the increased study on gender, racial relations (Roberts et al., 2020), and power dynamics. These trends can help society understand more about current issues like racism, sexism, and other forms of inequality.
How well can social psychological research help effect social change?
Social psychology research can help lead to social change by enlightening society on issues and helping them seek solutions (Camerer et al., 2018). It can also offer possible solutions to the community’s social problems or common psychological challenges (Kekecs et al., 2023).
What ethical issues should current and future researchers take into consideration as they design new studies in order to positively impact society?
Moreover, while researchers are designing new studies, they should consider that some participants do not want to remain anonymous in some studies (Saunders et al., 2015), creating an ethical dilemma.
Synthesize what you have learned during this module’s blogging activities. Has your thinking changed from exchanging ideas with classmates and experiencing their viewpoints?
The blogging activity was one of the most exciting learning activities. From a general overview, I learned the value of exchanging ideas. Exchanging ideas with classmates and experiencing their viewpoints also changed my perspective on social psychology. Initially, I believed that social psychology only dealt with people’s mental issues. However, through discussions, I have learned that social psychology also deals with social problems facing society simultaneously (Kekecs et al., 2023). Hence, social psychology has more value and is not limited to treating psychological issues alone.
