Pros and Cons of How the Forces of Change Affect My Quality of Life

Globalization has rapidly increased over the past decade as people embrace diversity and inclusion of people from different backgrounds in the community and workplaces. However, there are mixed reactions to immigration, diversity, and inclusion because of the risks and benefits of developing and sustaining a global community. According to Mark Zuckerberg, society is currently being influenced by the forces of openness, global community, and freedom against isolation, nationalism, and authoritarianism forces (Doubek, 2017). The forces of openness, freedom, and global community positively affect my quality of life by enabling me to access a wide range of information by interacting with people from different backgrounds. This information is essential in developing new ideas that I can use to improve my lifestyle and start a business that generates a good income. However, a global community can negatively impact my quality of life due to stereotypes, bias, and discrimination against me in a society where I am among the minority group.

The forces of authoritarianism, isolation, and nationalism can positively affect my quality of life by protecting my rights. For example, authoritarianism ensures that all rights of the citizens in a global community are protected even though it means isolating non-citizens. Section 1 of Amendment XIV of the United States Constitution states that no State should enforce or make a law that violates the immunities or privileges of the United States citizens (America’s Founding Documents, 2022). Therefore, I am assured that the forces of authoritarianism, isolationism, and nationalism will protect my rights. However, these forces could negatively affect my quality of life by creating uncertainty on whether I should interact with immigrants based on how the authorities portray them. For example, the Trump administration painted a bad picture of immigrants by portraying them as terrorists and violent criminals (Kamarck et al., 2022). Such assumptions could lead to the isolation of immigrants in society as people fear for their safety.

President George Bush embraced immigration. In his speech on immigration reform on April 9, 2007, he assured the United States citizens that the border was secure. He identified the main forces of the changes in society as illegal immigration and the regulation of the entry of immigrants at the border. He stated that illegal immigration is a serious problem in the United States (Bush, 2022). Notably, illegal immigration negatively impacts my quality of life by increasing insecurity in the community. However, it could also positively impact my quality of life by increasing my wages when my employer hires many immigrants because most of them are paid the minimum wage since they are desperate to get a job. Most employers are unable to verify the legal status of an immigrant, thus making it hard to comply with the laws prohibiting hiring illegal immigrants. Therefore, they may hire an immigrant to work in areas where they do not interact with customers, such as factories, back offices, and restaurants.

The regulation of entry of immigrants at the border can positively affect my quality of life by increasing safety in the community. It can also increase the participation of immigrants in the workforce, leading to economic growth. According to Bailey (2015), one of the impacts of globalization is faster economic growth due to the availability of labor and the exchange of opinions and ideas. For example, immigrants may work in factories to increase production, thus increasing economic growth, which translates to improved quality of life. Immigration regulation may also positively impact my quality of life by creating access to new products introduced by immigrants. For instance, immigrants may introduce new menus in restaurants to serve their traditional foods to people from their culture and other cultures interested in trying their traditional foods (Baburaj, 2015). This can increase my quality of life by enabling me to learn different things about a culture’s traditions and traditional foods.
