Challenges in Risk and Quality Management

Challenges in Risk and Quality Management

Identifying and assessing risk is among the challenges in risk and quality management, as it is quite difficult to expect and accurately evaluate the potential risk. Johnson and Sollecito (2020) claim that the healthcare industry continues to face high risk and preventable harm regardless of risk and quality management. Since patient safety and outcomes depend on the organization’s ability to accurately assess risks and prevent harm, identifying and evaluating risk can be considered the most difficult challenge to overcome. Failure to do so could result in adverse effects, legal actions, and even death.

Consistently attaining effective interdisciplinary collaboration could be challenging in risk and quality management. It is common for individuals to attribute any failures to system errors, thereby absolving them of their fiduciary duty or duty of care to act in the patient’s best interests (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). However, it is possible to attain better quality and risk management through collaboration and accountability. Adapting to the changing technology also poses a major challenge to risk and quality management. Given that technology changes over time, keeping up with this could prove challenging. However, I believe that ineffective leadership in risk and quality management projects is the most difficult challenge to overcome. Leading such projects requires a combination of personal, facilitation, and technical skills and should happen at various levels. Proper alignment with the organization’s and staff’s priorities is needed, and an individual needs to ensure active engagement and collaboration among the members to attain a common goal (Dixon-Woods et al., 2020). Attaining all these things could be challenging. Johnson and Sollecito (2020) acknowledge the need to have strong leadership to attain proper risk and quality management to ensure, zero tolerance for preventable harm.
