Factors to Consider When Optimizing a Website for Google Search
Keywords in Title and Heading Tags
Keywords are important in optimizing a website for Google searches (Ziakis et al., 2019). This is because when an internet user types a word on the search engine, websites with keywords similar to the words typed suffice first. Therefore, a company that wants to optimize its website should ensure that the website contains a keyword in the title (Chaffey & Smith, 2017). For example, an e-commerce website would contain words like buy, order, store, etc. Keywords are also required in website headers, such as H1, H2, and H3 tags (Chaffey & Smith, 2017). This would ensure that the headings are also indexed when a user searches for items on the search engine.
Loading for the Website and Its Size
A website’s loading speed determines its ranking when search engine results are returned (Ziakis et al., 2019). Therefore, an e-commerce website should not contain elements that take time to load if the company aims to optimize the website for Google searches. Such elements would include graphics and other files such as HTML. Code optimization should be done to ensure that HTML files are not heavier than necessary. Also, graphic elements could be changed to less heavy ones or compressed to small sizes where applicable.
Length for Title and Description
The title and description texts of a website should be short to ensure that they are retrieved easily by the search engine (Ziakis et al., 2019). An e-commerce company should use short and precise text in the title tag for website optimization (Chaffey & Smith, 2017). According to Ziakis et al. (2019), 70 or fewer characters are recommended in the title text for Google search. The description found on meta tags should contain 155 characters or less for Google search. Notably, a lack of description text would be as bad as having over 155 characters.
