The symptoms and signs the young woman is manifesting show that she is developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the accident. The three additional questions I would ask her to gain more information would be:
Have you been experiencing flashbacks and intrusive thoughts related to the accident you were involved in?
How often do you have problems falling asleep, and how long does it take to fall asleep?
How are your personal relationships doing so far since you had the accident?
The diagnosis of this young woman’s mental and emotional health condition will be based on her reporting of how she experiences her symptoms, the changes in her behavior, and her attitudes toward others. Therefore, the appropriate assessment instrument to use in this case is the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The PCL-5 is a 20-item self-report questionnaire that provides DSM-5 criteria for PTSD symptoms (Forkus et al., 2022).
The PCL-5 assessment instrument is appropriate as it can help assess the young woman’s self-rated experiences, behaviors, changes in moods and cognition, and other thought and behavioral intrusions that can help determine if she has PTSD. On the other hand, the questions are appropriate for this case for various reasons. For instance, the first question can help determine if she has intrusive thoughts and flashbacks related to the accident, which can indicate a case of PTSD. The other questions are appropriate as they can help identify the symptoms, such as poor sleep and sleeping patterns and strained social relationships, which indicate PTSD. The PCL-5 and the questions can help rate the severity of PTSD for accurate diagnosis and care. Besides, the accuracy and precision of diagnosis affect or influence intervention efficacy and acceptability (Simpson et al., 2021).
