Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is the process used to gather data about problem behaviour to better comprehend and describe the reasons behind its occurrence (Yell et al., 2013). An FBA needs to attain five outcomes, namely: operational descriptions of the problem behaviour; description of the antecedents and setting events such as the activities, place, and times; description of the effects behind the problem behaviour; verification of consequences and predictors following direct observation, and summary hypothesis statement that should serve as the foundation for planning the positive behaviour support plan (Yell et al., 2013).
The operational definition needs to be complete, clear, and objective and should be described so as to shift from subjective interpretations or impressions of underlying behaviour causes and to move towards an objective, accurate, and direct measurement of the occurrence of the targeted behaviour. For instance, if the problem behavior has been identified as physical aggression, then the operational definition should be; making any forceful contact with someone else with any part of their feet, legs, arms, or hands or forcefully tossing things at others (Yell et al., 2013). By making an operational definition, it is possible to make a quick review of various probable setting events, consequences, and antecedents and offer a good starting point so as to start observational FBA methods. One should be able to assess the conditions (e.g., physical or medical) that cause the person to behave the way they do and at what times these behaviours are likely to occur. With the information gathered, one can begin to make a summary statement or a tentative hypothesis concerning the consequences that sustain the problem behaviour and make the appropriate positive behaviour support plan (Yell et al., 2013).
