Suicide is a major issue in the United States. The rise in suicide rates has created a need to engage mental healthcare experts to prevent suicide and promote mental health, particularly among people with a high likelihood of being suicidal. Social workers play a vital role in reducing suicide rates in the community. Licensed clinical social workers provide evidence-based clinical interventions and counseling to prevent suicide. For example, they talk to clients with suicidal thoughts, assess their safety, and provide the resources they need to cope with stress. Licensed clinical social workers may also create programs to help individuals experiencing stress and depression interact with other people, thus reducing the likelihood of suicide. The role of social workers in preventing suicide can be interpreted based on Durkheim’s theory of suicide. The theory suggests that the configuration of suicide rates is a major part of a class or group of people’s social interactions, and social interactions vary based on the extent of regulation and moral integration (Hossen, 2022). The theory suggests that suicide is divided into different types. One of them is egoistic suicide which arises from high or limited integration, and the second one is fatalistic suicide which results from high or limited regulation (Mueller et al., 2021). Therefore, social workers must identify the type of suicide they are preventing to offer the most effective intervention. Although there is more focus on integrating individuals experiencing stress and other psychological issues into society to create a sense of belonging and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings, there are concerns about the risk of too much integration. According to Abrutyn & Mueller (2015), a connected society could limit people’s ability to make decisions under specific conditions leading to suicide. Therefore, it is vital to understand the causes of suicide before creating an intervention program to help social workers effectively prevent suicide.
Licensed clinical social workers experience various challenges when implementing their role in preventing suicide in the community. One challenge is the lack of cooperation from individuals with suicidal thoughts. In some instances, individuals receiving help to prevent suicide are not open about how they feel and their thoughts, thus making it hard for social workers to offer the most effective intervention. Another challenge is the lack of cooperation from the community. The success of suicide intervention programs relies on collaboration from community members in integrating the individuals into society and creating a conducive environment for their recovery. In some instances, the community may create a hostile environment by judging a person or excluding them from community activities leading to increased suicidal thoughts and suicide. The impact of the community on suicide is also evident in the norms that may promote psychological issues. According to Mueller et al. (2021), in communities where violent oppression and structural inequality is prevalent, many people may be vulnerable to suicide. Therefore, communities have a role in suicide prevention by eliminating norms that could oppress others and create psychological harm. It is also essential to inform community members about where they can get psychological help to prevent suicide.

Written Assignment 1 will require you to interview someone in your community who has
dealt with any of the social conflicts that we have discussed in the first half of the term.
For example, suicide, bullying, depression, homelessness, and discrimination of any kind.
These interviews can be done in person, via computer, or other means of
communication, but a one-on-one interaction is necessary. As a last resort, if you
cannot find someone to interview, you can also choose a profession that is front and
center with current social conflict and discuss your choice in detail to include
sociological perspectives and or other course-related material that you see fit. This is
an introduction course, so you have some leeway with the direction of your paper, but
please make sure you relate it to the material in the first 4 units.
