American Citizenship Discussion
According to the US Constitution (n.d), US citizens are bound by the Constitution and must follow it and its laws. US citizenship is acquired by birth or through naturalization. If two US parents give birth outside the country, the child automatically becomes a US citizen. If one was born by at least one parent who is a US citizen and lives in the US, they also automatically become a US citizen. That means even US non-citizens can give birth to a child who then automatically becomes a US citizen while they remain non-citizens.
Among others, property ownership is a fundamental privilege for any American citizen. It does not matter whether the individual seeking to own property acquired their citizenship through naturalization or by birth (Upham,1126). The right to property ownership was finalized by a court process that gave non-whites the right to property ownership. All American citizens also enjoy the privilege of voting and working in the US (Upham,1135). Another fundamental right relates to the practice of a religion of choice. All citizens have the right to practice their religious beliefs, even if they belong to minority religious groups. The right to practice a religion of choice is significant given the intolerance that may have been expressed against the Islamic religion at some due to the blanket linkage to terrorist attacks.
The rights, immunities, and privileges above do not extend to everyone who happens to be in the US, save for a few. Undocumented citizens cannot vote in the US. However, they have a right to practice their religion of choice and are subject to benefiting from due process and equal treatment under the law. Only documented immigrants are subject to benefit from these privileges in terms of property ownership and right to work.
